🔍 Radical & Component Referencezh.herman.au — commonly used building blocks of Chinese characters

Most Chinese characters are built from familiar components. A radical (部首) is the meaning-bearing part that hints at what the character is about. The other part may provide the sound (phonetic) or complete the picture. This page lists the radicals and components used in the course's Character Breakdowns.

📖 How to use

Find a component by its appearance or English name. Each card shows the component, what it means, example characters, and its type. Tap the component in any lesson's breakdown to see it here.

💡 Tips for beginners

• Left-side radicals (亻, 氵, 扌, 口, 讠, 忄, 木, 钅) usually indicate the character's meaning category.
• Top components (宀, 艹, 穴, ⺮, 广) describe what kind of thing it is.
• The right or bottom part often gives the sound (e.g. 青 in 请, 情, 晴, 清 all sound qīng/qíng/qǐng).
• Many components are simplified versions of full characters (e.g. 讠←言, 饣←食, 纟←糸).
• The same component can look different depending on position (心→忄, 手→扌, 火→灬, 水→氵).
